Mad about Mette

Mette Marie Kreup Bertelsen

Mette Marie Kreup Bertelsen is a new menswear designer to bookmark. A graduate of Fashion Design at Designskolen Kolding she recently showed at Copenhagen Fashion Week S/S 11 as part of a selection of BA and MA students from the school.

A film and photos she had previously taken of the New York subway was what marked her direction. Upon reviewing the footage she was transfixed by the blurred snapshots and flighty characters. This prompted her to delve further into the idea of contrasts-between movement and stagnation; light and dark, and the silhouettes that occur when movement turns into stagnation.

Her use of colour directly references the images she captured on the subway; the myriad of light melds with the blues and the greys of her garments creating a hazy, yet icy colour palette. It may be menswear and intended for S/S but I think her pieces would just as easily be at home in my A/W wardrobe.
