Hijacking Fashion

For me The Nightmare Before Christmas has always been my quintessential Christmas film, so feeling in the festive mood thanks to our new issue The Christmas Theatre Issue fashion editorial where we retreated to an old theatre and looked at fashion that embodied both a Dickensian and soiree feel I was delighted to stumble upon the work of illustrator, Achraf Amiri.

In his illustrations characters not too far removed from Jack Skellington and his friends play dress up in couture-esque gowns and the latest designer collections. I love the idea of these outcast creatures highjacking luxe gowns as I can almost picture them in Disney's Haunted Mansion's ballroom as I began to wonder what they may look like in one of beautiful vintage gowns we featured. The McQueen SS11 illustration has to be one of my favourites as the butterflies emerge from the subjects face as if the characters has just released her demons and has been re-born in a swan like fashion thanks to the magic of McQueen.

Though lavish gowns are not the only garments these beings try on as they are also partial to some distinctively contemporary styles such as Balenciaga SS11 yet their choice of look still lies within the eveningwear as they embrace the more masculine side of the night with a tuxedo blazer and dinner shirt.

However on occasion they do step outside this 'society' world as they recreate a scene that lies somewhere between Peter Lindbergh's infamous supermodels as bikers in the 1991, American Vogue shoot and i-D's Edward Enninful styled Pretty Young Things shoot of September 09.

And I for one look forward to seeing what look they shall hijack in the new year.
