Ellie Cryer's Illustrations
Having recently had my eyes opened to the world of illustration, thanks to an excitable friend of mine who has just completed his first year of a degree in the subject, I’ve found a new love interest in these drawings and detailed sketches.
Browsing through various blogs and online magazines, it’s a matter of seconds before you stumble upon an illustrator of some sort but one that has captured my attention for quite some time now after seeing one of her pieces in Amelias Magazine, is University College of Falmouth student Ellie Cryer.
Hailing from my own hometown, Bristol, her illustrations range from the sweet and cheerful with unicorns, cupcakes, a deer having a picnic and cute lovebirds to something much more sinister with skulls, distorted faces and dead budgies. There isn’t one set theme with Ellie’s work, looking through her portfolio I find myself both giggling at a drawing of two old grannies knitting a tshirt that reads ‘I love Klaxons’ and then pulling a sad face at a crying Elvis Presley beside a caption that reads ‘all shook up.’
I literally fell in love with her work whilst looking through her online portfolio, wanting her drawings of wolves and Bambi look-alikes for my bedroom wall. They’re colourful, powerful and although generally light-hearted, send across a little message of their own; a wolf howling below a caption that reads, ” all I am is yours” … sob.
Ellie herself is quirky individual, saying that she loves eggs and Harry Potter ‘fan music’ on her own website, so really, it’s no wonder that her illustrations are so wonderfully wacky.
