Adventures on the Silk Road
I was positively glowing to hear that as part of The British Council’s exchange program to promote the silk trade in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Basso and Brooke are exhibiting at the Design Museum from June 16th – August 24th. I adore Basso and Brooke, they combine so many elements from around the world, with technologies and print techniques that it’s hard not to be totally drawn in by their bold collections and juxtaposing patterns and fabrics. I remember it was their SS09 collection that really got me hooked, because of the Japanese inspiration that they incorporated. I saw it in a magazine and the collection jumped out at me and knocked every other collection on the page to the floor.
They will be exhibiting a capsule collection that was inspired by a trip the duo made to Uzbekistan, where they spent ten days researching and visiting silk factories as well as attending Uzbek fashion week. In turn two Uzbek weavers came to the UK to work in their studio, “Today, many of the countries of Central and South Asia along this route have become mysterious or misunderstood in the West. New Silk Road, aims to use the arts traditions of the region to make these places seem vivid again, and to address negative stereotypes with a creative energy that is independent of politics.” This exhibition is free and will be showcasing more designers that have taken part in this exchange in the coming months so keep your eyes peeled and head on down to The Design Museum.
