NOM*d

NOM*d
Though I thoroughly dislike this word, there is something indescribably 'cool' about the New Zealand label NOM*d. Something that makes me want to turn my back on the polished feel of Paris, the bright lights of New York and the London edge and set up camp in the moss covered mountains of the South Island. It makes me want to forget about ultra-lux and focus on the ultra-lax.

As a label that was set up in 1986, designer Margarita Robertson has managed to keep the label simmering gently on the back-burner, not inviting too much press, not demanding too much attention, but quietly surveying the fashion landscape from the proverbial back seat, reflecting the design statement as 'a label unaffected by trends and whims, instead affecting the cool, considered gaze of the fashion outsider'.

The label's SS10 collection saw an abundance of deconstructed tailoring, paired with one of a kind vintage pieces, reworked into modern and directional garments that are wearable. Together they amount to something like a layering masterclass. But the thing that really caught my eye on the website is the video previewing their AW10 inspirational video 'Turncoats', because if the video is anything to go by, I've just found my new favourite label. Think naughty Victorian school children, running around in the mud: white cotton layered dresses with gathered puff-sleeves and striped cheesecloth puff balls with black calf-length army boots - my own personal perfection. Check it out here.
